Where have i been??

It has been a long while since i have written anything on here, it has been a busy and frustrating couple of weeks. First things first, i have hurt my right foot which means that i am bed bound so have not been able to go anywhere or do anything remotely exciting, i have been in bed resting. It is not a major injury but it has meant that i have been hobbling around on crutches pretty much feeling sorry for myself.

This has meant, however, that i have been doing quite a lot of online shopping at the moment and with all the discount codes flying around, why wouldn't you? I have been buying up all the high end beauty bits that i would not normally purchase because they are just way out of my price range. If anyone is interested, i will be posting them up soon.

Christmas really is my favourite time of year so i am gutted to be missing out on Winter Wonderland and the Christmas lights which go up in Oxford Street and the surrounding areas make me so happy. The broken foot has made me travelling to Central London impossible and i don't fancy battling the stairs and crowds at this time of year in this state. However, i do have a few Christmas meals coming up so i may do some restaurant reviews as well.

Anyway have a great Christmas everyone and i shall speak to you all very soon! :)

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein

I had the opportunity to interview Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor for BizAsia before their upcoming release of the film 'Gori Tere Pyaar Mein'. It was surprising to see that both were down to earth and so incredibly open to talk about their experiences whilst shooting the film. See here for my interview with the duo: http://www.media247.co.uk/showbiz/bizasia-interviews-imran-kareena-for-gori-tere-pyaar-mein

Ram Leela Interview

As part of my duties for BizAsia, i was invited by Eros International to web chat with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone about their upcoming film 'Ram Leela', directed by the amazing Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It is hard to deny that their chemistry is sizzling and one only has to have a look at the trailers of the film to see that. They were a pleasure to interview and you could tell that they really have worked hard in this film to give their all for an equally demanding director.

Check my interview with them here: http://www.media247.co.uk/showbiz/ranveer-deepika-talk-to-bizasia-about-ram-leela

Sneak Peek: Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan visit London for Gori Tere Pyaar Mein

Today i had the unique opportunity to interview Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan ahead of their release of 'Gori Tere Pyaar Mein'. They were both lovely and despite having a long day of interviews, happy to speak to me and talk about their upcoming film.

Fashion News: Blake Lively for L'Oreal Paris

I just had to express my excitement over this, how amazing does Blake Lively look. She has just been announced as the face of L'Oreal Paris and i cannot think of a better role model. She is hugely successful and really has been unapologetic about being who she is. I still remember seeing her in the Sisterhood of Travelling Pants, yes i did watch that film, and being totally enthralled by her. Blake is not a size zero and she doesn't choose to become ultra skinny for the sake of getting roles either. Hurrah L'Oreal Paris, this is a real coup!

Sneak Peek: Kareena Kapoor Khan gets honoured at the House of Commons

As part of my role at BizAsia, i had the opportunity to go and see Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan get an award at the Houses of Commons. She is absolutely beautiful and it is clear to see why so many are enchanted by her. She came across as friendly and rather self deprecating, refreshing from an actress of her standing. Check out BizAsia's sneak peek into the event here: http://www.media247.co.uk/showbiz/sneak-peek-kareena-kapoor-khan-gets-honoured-at-the-house-of-commons

Memories: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

I still remember the first time i ever watched 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. It was in India and i was sitting in sweltering hot cinema, sticking to the rickety leather seats and though on any other day, this would have made me so frustrated, i was totally enchanted by what i was watching. I was heavily infatuated with Shah Rukh Khan at the time, so that would have something to do with it but this film really made me fall in love with the characters and the storyline. The songs, the dialogues and every tear jerking moment was engraved in my mind from the first viewing and i can still watch it back to this day and be just as emotionally involved.

I don't know what it was about the film but it touched many hearts around the world. Karan Johar truly created a masterpiece with this film, one that lives on to this day. Check out my article i did on this film for BizAsia: http://www.media247.co.uk/showbiz/15-years-ago-today-revisiting-kuch-kuch-hota-hai

In the meantime, i am heading off to watch this film for more than thousandth time and fall in love with it all over again!

Sunidhi Chauhan interview

The incredibly talented singer Sunidhi Chauhan is in concert at the Royal Albert Hall and i caught up with her for a quick chat about it for BizAsia: http://www.media247.co.uk/showbiz/bizasia-talks-to-sunidhi-chauhan-about-her-uk-tour-2013

Besharam Press Conference

From left to right: Neetu Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor

As part of my brilliant role at BizAsia, i had the unique opportunity to attend the press conference for the latest Ranbir Kapoor film titled 'Besharam'. What makes this film really special is the fact that it also stars his parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor so the press conference was one occasion that could not be missed. I had a great time hearing the Kapoor family speak about their roles in the film and the future of Bollywood according to them. The Kapoors being the ruling family of Bollywood, their opinion counts! Check out my piece here: http://www.media247.co.uk/showbiz/bizasia-attends-the-besharam-press-conference-in-london

Young versus Old: Shuddh Desi Romance

Marriage, the big topic on all parents and child's mind once they hit the age of 18. This is not going to be a conventional review of 'Shuddh Desi Romance' but some observations. This film questions the major element that society seems to built on and functions upon - Marriage and the current generations view on the institution. What i liked about this film was the newness of the idea that instead of a romantic relationship or married life, young people were seeking connections with each other. That one thing they had in common is the loneliness they experienced and how they felt like they were not normal for not conforming to society's norms.

Communities and in particular the Asian community is going through a major change in attitudes with the younger generation becoming frustrated by the social norms forced upon them by the older generation. Though i can't speak for back home and their society as i don't know much about it, in the UK this 'gap' in generations is becoming more visible with the younger generation often in conflict with the elders. Where once the norm was to reach a particular age, get married and 'settle down', the younger generation are questioning this and are opting to pursue life goals and careers instead. I am not by any means trying to say that people can't have both a successful marriage and career but some are questioning whether the institution of marriage is really for them. They want to be something in life and achieve something and find the idea of marriage to be restricting and tying them down to a society that they never felt a part of in the first place.

It is difficult to feel like yourself in a society that never felt like you fitted in, in the first place. Being born in the UK, the traditions and culture can feel alien at times and you just don't know if you can conform to it and behave in that way. That is not to say that being Western is where they fit, that can feel alien too.  It is an interesting time for the British Asian community as it is evolving and adopting Western attitudes and marriage is still ultimately a goal for some. However some are opting not to marry and what do their futures if they don't settle down? Will the young British Asian community ever feel at one with their British and their Asian heritage? Will marriage continue to be the ultimate goal in 50 years time? Time will tell.

Meeting Shah Rukh Khan

Me with Shah Rukh Khan at the Chennai Express launch

There are moments in life which simply do astound you and remind you of why you are doing what you are. When i said at the age of 12 that i wanted to become a writer, my parents were shocked. Their immediate and very Asian response was 'your science grades are fantastic, why not become a doctor?'. At that time, i pointed at my latest issue of Filmfare (Indian Bollywood magazine) with Shah Rukh Khan plastered on the front and said 'I want to meet him!' It may sound a little cringeworthy to admit now but i was more than obsessed with him as a child and still adore him to this day. It is not because i think i am in love with him, though at some point i think i was, it is because he represented escapism and a chance for a future that i never thought i would have at such a young age. Becoming a journalist meant that at least i would be one step closer to meeting him and getting close to having that dream coming true.

Yesterday, i met Shah Rukh Khan and it was brilliant. I have probably read every interview where he has been mentioned and every person comments on how humble and generous he comes across and i got to see it for myself. He was so honest about the reflection of himself and spoke humbly about his success. For someone who is so internationally renowned, it was fascinating to see someone so self reflective and without any airs or graces. He wanted to ensure that he got his point across but without any dramatics, he spoke clearly and concisely. I riled up the courage at the end to ask for a picture and he agreed. A great man, not because of the fact he is a celebrity, but the fact he has kept his values and his honesty. I am glad that i was not disappointed after meeting someone i admire so much and Mr Khan, you still have a devoted fan in me.

Watch out for my interview with the man himself on BizAsia: http://www.media247.co.uk/showbiz/

Beauty favourites: June 2013

Rimmel Salon Pro by Kate in Soul Sessions £4.49 (Boots.com
Rimmel London Metal Rush £3.99 (Boots.com)

Though i am not big user of nail polish, i have been loving these two shades. I bought them a while ago under the 3 for 2 range and decided to test them out. In this picture, i am wearing the Salon Pro is Soul Sessions as a base coat with the Metal Rush layered on top. It is so pretty that i had to share them with you!

Rimmel - Kate Lasting Finish Shade 05, £5.49 (Boots.com)

As summer or what we have of it here in the UK has finally arrived, i have been loving experimenting with different shades of lipstick. However, i do find that i keep coming back to the same colour and that is pink. I think my dark complexion means that reds and pinks are the best shades for me and they look great if i am looking to go out in the day and want to bright lip to make me feel all glowy!

Hope you enjoyed my beauty favourites and let me know what yours are below,

Few thoughts from The Great Gatsby

Fashion
There is something about the roaring 1920s look which has people fascinated with it and desperate to emulate it. From the moment that Daisy's character burst on to the screen in the film, i was enchanted. The jewellery was all pearls and diamonds and every so pretty with the lavish bracelets, long pearl necklaces and the feathered headbands. The outfits were equally elegant yet fun with the slip dresses in pastel colours and the mink and fur collars that made the dresses look even more decadent.

Hope
I think it is very easy to forget how rare hope is these days when everything else around us seems to be failing or not working in some way. Gatsby's character really bought this home for me, he was always hoping for his true love to come back to him and that was his motivation, it made me think about what drives me as a person and what i hope for. Though this is way too private for me to share on here but it is a reminder that we should never lose track of our motivation and the things we are passionate about to achieve in life.

Drama Drama Drama
Some of the best scenes i found in the film were the party scenes. I thought they were fantastically created for the audience and created a visual display of decadence and theatre. I especially loved the mini performances shown in each scene which were brilliantly orchestrated to blend in with the eccentric crowd. Absolutely astounding!

It has been a while since i have done a real Primark shop, partly because i haven't really needed anything and also i am trying to be good and only update parts of my wardrobe which have fallen to the way side recently. Neon bobble scarf £4.00

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Theatre Royal Drury Lane

Directed by Sam Mendes
Starring Douglas Hodge as Willy Wonka, Nigel Planer as Grandpa Joe, Jack Costelloe and others (see full cast list here)

As the trend is these days where many films are quickly turned into huge broadway productions, i was very excited to hear that Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was coming to the West End. Directed by Sam Mendes, i expected it to be a marvellously colourful production portraying the full extent for Dahl's world to an enthralled audience. I loved the book as a child but i have to say that just by watching the trailers of Johnny Depp's version of this story freaked me out. I didn't even bother watching it so i was even more impatient to see this musical. As a birthday surprise, i was taken to see it and it was everything that i expected it to be!

With the use of special effects and lighting trickery, every unique scene of the book was bought to life on stage by the cast and crew. The play begins with a short documentary illustrated by Quentin Blake on how chocolate is made, it was very well done and the children next to me were glued to it. With the educational aspect out of the way, the story continued to show the harshness of Charlie's family situation complete with the grandparents in the bed. It was emotional and heart warming and the love of the family for one little boy enraptured the audience into the mood of the play.

Post interval, the play went on to tell the demise of the various characters at the chocolate factory with some brilliant use of CGI in quick witted scenes. Augustus Gloop falling into a chocolate waterfall was all done through the clever use of holograms and it was unbelievably flawless. One thing i thought would be sure to be the downfall would be the Oompah Loompahs but even these turned out brilliant. With the use of puppets, they performed dance routines and sang, it was hard to believe that they were indeed not little people. Willy Wonka was thankfully kept eccentric and not as freaky as Depp's version, and so was loved by the audience. The child stars in this production have to be commended with the little boy who played Charlie, being sweet and true to the character from the book. His hope and want to be better for his family was endearing and heart warming to watch.

The sets are truly mind blowing in this show and the production have to be commended for the easy transitions bringing a book that is part fantasy, part reality onto the stage and making it seem real to the audience. I would love to see this play again and really hope it runs for a long time in the West End.

Zara sale haul: June 2013

I do like the odd Zara product but i do find it a little bit of my price range. I know that some of you may be sitting there thinking how can she say it is expensive?! I find it is, i am not a cheapskate by any sense of the word but i do find it pricey to shop on a daily basis. I think it is very good for the odd statement piece to add to my wardrobe and sales are the best time for me to venture in there and go quite literally crazy. So without further ado, here is what i bought:

Neon Orange Fine Knit Tiger Print Tee £9.99

Emerald Green Dress with pleat detail £25.99

Neon yellow bird print sleeveless blouse with leather peter pan collar detail £15.99

Beauty review: YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch

YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch £25 (Available here

I am very late to the party with this review. This is partly because when the YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch originally came out, they didn't do my shade. I have a medium beige skin tone where i am somewhere in between fair and dark so when i first tried this out, the shade i was given made me look like a ghost. It was  totally mismatched for my skin tone so i steered clear and continued to use my Collection 2000 concealer under my eyes as and when i needed it.

Watching icovetthee YouTube Spring Make Up Edit (see here), she talked about the YSL Touche Eclat Foundation giving her a good coverage. So i wandered into Boots to try out the foundation and the assistant behind the YSL counter called Sharon tried out the YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch and i was amazed. She used shade 5 which went on effortlessly and blended into my skin and made my eyes glow. It was so lovely that i had to buy it. I have been using it every day since i bought it and i love it. I can use it alone or as a base for your eye shadow, it is totally up to you. I have incredibly greasy skin yet it stays on all day and doesn't do that weird crease under my eyes either.

The foundation, i should add, i didn't get on so well with. It does provide good coverage but it is just so thick and my skin is constantly breaking out already without it, so i dread to think what it is doing to my pores when it is on. The shade on this was lovely but i just don't think it is the right foundation for my skin type at all and i will continue to hunt for this.

Thoughts on 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewaani'

There are not many Bollywood films that i get obsessed with these days. They all seem to be routine and are huge let downs from the promise in their trailers. When the trailers for 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' came out, i was excited to watch it. Firstly because Ranbir Kapoor's moves in 'Badtameez Dil' had enchanted me and finally the duo of Deepika Padukone and Ranbir were being reunited on screen. Every song that got released on YouTube, video by video, got me even more excited to watch it. I was going to review this film but i thought why not just do a more contemplative post about.

Live for the Moment
As we grow older, we do stop doing this. Whether it is the stresses of daily life or other commitments, we forget that each moment lasts for a certain amount of time. After that, it is gone forever. In the scene where Ranbir's character Bunny says 'Is raat ki kabhi subha kabhi aani nahin chaye? (This night should never turn into morning), he just struck a chord with me. I am lucky in the sense that i live quite a varied life and i have so many different experiences on a daily basis. Nothing about my days can be called monotonous or routine and i do work hard to keep it that way. The way i see it is that life's too short and you have enjoy the moments, no matter how small, each day.

Follow your Dreams
Remember when you were young and talking to your classmates in the school and trying to answer the question 'What do you want to when you grow up?'. We all had different answers and i, for one, wanted to travel the world just like Bunny and live around the globe. As i grew up, responsibilities set in and this dream has become less and less real for me. Am i sad about it? I do regret not taking some risks and travelling and seeing the world and it does make me incredibly upset to think about it. Maybe one day my dream will come true, time shall tell. It is important to follow your dreams, no matter how small and be prepared to walk away from the sensible things if your dream is calling you. It does take guts but then if you don't, all you are left with is regrets.

Friendships
This theme is strong throughout the film and the friendships between Bunny, Naina, Aditi and Avinash are what underpin the storyline. Going back to when i was young, i was always desperate to fit in and have lots of friends but growing up, i have become more comfortable just having a few good friends. I am not antisocial by any sense of the world and i can strike up with a brick wall if necessary. However as a person, you have to learn how to keep friends but also to let go of them, for them to find their own path. It is okay to grow out of friends as we develop as people. Some will grow with you while others will get left behind. It is probably most important to be friends with yourself. Know what you are good at and what you are not and enjoy your own company.

Anyway, these are just a few thoughts from me, let me know if any of you agree or disagree below!

Movie Review: Fast & Furious 6

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and others
Star rating: **

The Fast & Furious films have become their own franchise and whoever you say the title to, they know to expect fast cars, outrageous stunts and skimpily dressed girls to litter the landscape. This film was expected to be no different and it seemed that the audience knew what they signed up for before they had even watched this film.

The gang are living the quiet life after being chased out of Rio with Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) living in bliss as new parents. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) turns up to the perfect life with the allure of pardons all around of the gang and giving Dom (Vin Diesel) the opportunity to find 'back from the dead' girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). What proceeds is a mad cap chase through the London landscape, tearing through Canary Wharf, Piccadilly Circus and Whitehall as they chase after the bad guys.

Firstly, i have to say that it is amazing seeing the races taking place on the streets that we know so well and as they trash each one as they ride their American cars, it does create a hype for the British audience. Vin Diesel and the crew have the same chemistry and that is what makes these films such an exciting watch. Their code of family sticking together is strong throughout the film and it is good to see these films develop the characters on an individual basis. Jordana Brewster is literally left holding the baby in the film and doesn't have much of a part to play in the film. This is definitely a boys film and director Justin Lin has bought in the big guns with aeroplanes and an army tank being used in the stunt scenes. There are some neat gags put into the film, one of which is the naming of Hobbs as 'Samoan Thor' on Tej's phone. A fun watch typical of the franchise!

Selfridges Beauty Box 2013

Firstly i owe all of you a HUGE apology. I have been so busy with work and other things that i have not had time to blog about anything so yes, sorry again. There are literally millions of beauty boxes out there including Birchbox which i have not tried yet so please let me know in the comments below if you have done so.

The Selfridges Beauty Box was £25 which is pricey but considering what you get for it, i thought it was a really good deal. You get samples of products which normally cost a lot individually so to have them in a big box is just a bargain. First thing i was really excited to get was the Tangle Teezer but this one is for the shower. I have long fine hair so that means that it needs only a slight breeze to get all tangled and messy. I love the Tangle Teezer because it is so great on my hair and detangles it after a long day so easily. I have the handbag version as well as the two full sizes. I don't really use a shower comb but after my shower, my hair does become difficult to brush and i don't like putting lots of products in it. Therefore, this Aqua Splash Tangle Teezer is perfect for getting my tangles brushed out post-shower.

I was also excited about the Caudalie Beauty Elixir, this has received rave reviews by the blogging community but it is so pricey that i have not been able to bring myself to buy it. So i will try it out and see! Another thing i was really excited about was the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray. I like wearing my hair out in waves for a lot of the time so i wanted to see how this would help keep my hair in tact throughout the day.

I will be reviewing these as i try them all out but thought i would show all of you guys what was in it, in case some of you are interested in buying it! It is available here

For £25 you get:
Aqua Splash Tangle Teezer
Models Own Neon Nail Varnish
Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray 50ml
Molton Brown Aqua Shower Gel 100ml
Caudalie Beauty Elixir 30ml
St. Tropez Instant Glow Face Lotion 50ml
Jane Tran Hair Clips
Erborian BB Cream 12ml
Lancaster After Sun 40ml
St. Tropez exclusive in-store offer card

Movie Review: Gippi

Starring Riya Viji, Jayati Modi, Doorva Tripathi, Arbaaz Kadwani, Divya Dutta
Star rating ****

Judging the amount of promotion that Gippi has received via YouTube, i was excited yet wary of this film. Bollywood in recent years has fallen into promoting films so much that by the time it releases, it just seems like it overly marketed and never lives up to its promises. Gippi came across as the same but i really wanted to watch it because it was meant to be an simple story of a teenage girl trying to find love and her own identity. The soundtrack was equally preppy with tracks like 'Bhen di Takki' being a fun and catchy track to draw in the audience.

Gippi aka Gurpreet (Riya Viji) is a 14 year old confused teenage girl living with her brother Booboo (Arbaaz Kadwani) and her divorced mother Pappi (Divya Dutta) in Shimla. Gippi is an overweight, unpopular average student who is neither exceptional at sports or her studies. She instead, is often ridiculed by popular and beautiful Shamira (Jayati Modi) and is challenged by her to become the head girl at school. Gippi soon realises that this will be a tough task for her and supported by her loyal friend Anchal (Doorva Tripathi), she begins the uphill task to win the elections. As a side story, you also have the love story between Gippi and bad boy character Arjun (Taaha Shah) in the background.

Remember being a teenager and finding every single day a struggle at school, this is Gippi's life and it is so brilliantly portrayed in this film. No actress has ever looked as awkward on screen as Riya Viji but that is her charm in this film and you really do just want to give her a hug throughout this film. Whilst she inhabits this vulnerable and naive character in school, at home, she has this lovely close relationship with her mother who is facing her husband remarrying. Taaha Shah is hot on screen and plays the bad boy flawlessly, he leaves the audience a little bit infatuated with him too. No doubt this was the intention and i think when you leave the cinema, you will leave a little bit nostalgic for those years. The confusion, awkwardness and eagerness to please were all emotions we all felt at 14 and we are all very glad that we never have to feel those again. A feel good film which reminds us that there is always a simple time in life.

Movie Review: Star Trek Into Darkness

Starring Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bruce Greenwood, Chris Pine , Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana
Star rating: ****

There are not many films or TV series which have gained the cult following like Star Trek has and i am afraid that i am one of those trekkies. Be it the sense of belonging or the space adventure aspect that draws me in, i have always been a huge fan. The first Star Trek film established the Kirk and Spock bromance and helped sell Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as these two iconic characters. JJ Abrams was selling the Star Trek team to a whole new audience and fan base and also had the difficult task of keeping the devoted trekkies. Star Trek Into Darkness was meant to be the confident older brother of the first film, building on the re-energised sense of Trek mania.

This film plunges the audience into chaotic madness where Captain James T Kirk (Chris Pine) is on the run from an indigenous species as Spock (Zachary Quinto) is beemed down to planet's surface to prevent a volcano from erupting. When it looks like Enterprise will be losing Spock, Kirk flouts Starfleet's regulations by allowing the natives to see the Starship rising from the ocean to rescue Spock. When back on Earth, Kirk omits the incident from his records but Spock shops him to the authorities in his stubborness to follow regulations. Kirk is stripped of his command and demoted to first officer under the hand of his mentor (Bruce Greenwood). However after an attack on Starfleet comes from within, Kirk is called back into action to battle a new enemy, a mysterious man named Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch).

The Star Trek has always been about the relationship between Kirk and Spock and this is a strong theme in this film. As Spock realises that the two are indeed friends, it is interesting to see the two work together and apart throughout the film. Pine and Quinto play this to their advantage and are perfect to play the two characters and have some great one liners. Cumberbatch is brilliant as Khan and his serious expressions make him the brooding villian, heartless and ruthless to attain his goals. The film is well made and scenes are brilliantly executed. Karl Urban is great as Bones and comes into his own as the medical officer and partner in crime for Kirk. Scotty aka Simon Pegg brings some laughs from the audience and he is a great character in this film. This is a must see for all Trekkies, it is a refresh on the old story but is just as entertaining.

Movie Review: Oblivion

Starring Tom Cruise, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko
Star rating: **

Considering that the last time Tom Cruise was seen in a film was Jack Reacher, Oblivion promised to be yet another Cruise adventure but this time of the sci-fi kind. With a silver suited Cruise gracing the posters, it seemed that this would just as action packed film as Cruise's films always promise.

Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is a self-reliant and tough soldier/technician in the late 21st century where he spends him time fixing drones that patrol planet Earth. The planet has been destroyed after a nuclear war against alien invaders and its surface is inhabited with scavs aka scavengers. He works with adoring Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) to monitor humanity's final emigration to one of Saturn's moons. His immediate memory has been wiped but he keeps having a reoccurring romantic dream where he keeps meeting Julia (Olga Kurylenko).

Confused? You will be watching this film. Tom Cruise spends a lot of time with a worried expression on his face whilst he flies through space. He has some romantic scenes with Riseborough and Kurylenko but the women really are pretty props in the film and just as disposable. Morgan Freeman is entirely useless in his supporting actor role and could have done much more in this film. It is almost like the writers themselves got lost writing this incredibly long-winded complicated storyline and by the end of it, you begin to lose hope in the entire film. There are some fantastic CGI created of the post-war Earth surface with remnants of famous skylines scattered across the screen. Overall, the story for this film just didn't work and it went on for too long.

Spring into Summer at Westfield Stratford City

Westfield Stratford City are always very good at coming out with events that involve the local community and they offer something new for their shoppers. This bank holiday weekend it was the Spring into Summer Campaign. Bright and early on Saturday morning, i headed to Westfield to take part in a yoga class which was being taught by Julia White. It was a lovely relaxing experience, brilliant to start off this bank holiday weekend and it has set the tone for the rest of the weekend. A great idea from Westfield Stratford, i am truly impressed!!

Movie Review: Iron Man 3

Starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and others
Star rating: ***

When trailers for this film came out, like the previous two films, Iron Man 3 had the film world buzzing again. It was set to be the biggest blockbuster of the Iron Man series yet with Robert Downey Jr heading up the Iron Man franchise again. It is always hard, i think, for a film to live up to its previous two films and expectations are always far greater than for its predecessors too. Iron Man has now created a cult following within the audience with the comic book lovers who endeavour to pursue their hero from page to the big screen and the general film goer who is looking for an entertaining watch, two audiences which are hard to cater for and satisfy.

This film starts where the Avengers movie left off, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is left feeling bereft after dealing with a 'wormholes to another planet' and 'a big guy falling out of the sky with a big hammer' (his words not mine) and is now finding incredibly hard to move on from New York. His obsessive nature means that he is increasingly hidden away in his workshop playing around with Iron Man prototypes and co-habiting in a 'stable' relationship with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Meanwhile, trouble is brewing in the form of the Mandarin (Ben Kingley) a terrorist and fanatic who is intent on teaching America a lesson and an immoral scientist Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), a science entrepeneur who is rejected by Stark originally in his youth.

Robert Downey Jr is at his best, playing what by now, is a well rehearsed role of the sarcastic and obnoxious Tony Stark. He has some great scenes in the film with a little boy who is helping him and is comically dismissive of the boy's father leaving the child. Downey Jr 's portrayal of the broken hero humanises the character and that show of humanity is difficult to do in a character that is so fiercely arrogant and strong in other respects. Paltrow is more relaxed in this film than she ever has been and in the few scenes she has been given, she comes across as endearing. She has a great fight scene in the film and she plays off Downey Jr as great as ever.

The film has plenty of spectacle with some fantastic fight scenes which clearly have taken a lot of work to accomplish with some great use of CGI to make it as realistic as possible. Much so like the Dark Knight Trilogy's character Bane, the Mandarin is characterised to be as ruthless and dark, killing at a drop of hat. The problem is the script. It is not great in the sense that the story takes a turn for the unbelievable towards the end and it is sad because the first half does have the audience hooked. Downey has been given so many punchlines that they become less and less dramatic as the film goes on and it would have been interesting to see his character develop with his new found vulnerabilities. There are some great British gags about football, Downtown Abbey and Croydon which drew laughs from the audience too, but overall the script was weak. A good effort but for all the hype it received  it didn't quite deliver when it came to the result.

Vogue Festival 2013: Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham with British Vogue Editor Alexandra Shulman

On seeing the crowded theatre at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, Victoria Beckham’s first words were, “all of you want to hear me talk, I hope I will say something good now”. This drew laughter from the audience and it set the tone for the next hour as the former pop princess turned fashion designer talked about her fashion career and the amount of dedication it takes to become the woman who really has it all.

After Spice Girls split up, Victoria Beckham could have become the one no-one would have remembered but after a brief flirtation with the football WAG (Wives and Girlfriends) club, Victoria went on to become a household name in the world of celebrity. Many people tittered at the thought of Victoria going into fashion but she had the last laugh, with the likes of Hollywood stars wearing her dresses on the red carpet. Pictures papped by the paparazzi hardly do her any justice, in the flesh, she is healthy and happy with a self-deprecating personality that endears everyone to her charm and honesty.

What gives you the initial idea for your fashion collections?
“Each season, I get inspired by something different. I am fortunate to be able to travel a lot, to call London my home as well as Los Angeles, so last winter for example, my Victoria line was inspired by the Californian lifestyle. You can see that in the structure, in the prints and in the style of the dresses. Whereas my main line was inspired purely by one day, Romeo running in from school and he was wearing a baseball shirt and I thought ‘that looks really cool’ and so I had a baseball theme running through the ready –to-wear collection. The beanie hats were inspired by David wearing beanie hats. I get inspired by travelling and being at home and being a wife and a mother.

“It is great being back in London. London is such an inspiring place to live, so multicultural and interesting. I am happy”

How do you convey what you want in your collection to your team?
“At the start of every season, I sit down with my team and I talk about what I like, what I don’t like and what I like to wear myself. Ultimately I am designing clothes that I want to wear myself. What I often do, I use things that I don’t normally wear or find challenging to wear and I might have that as a starting point and find a way for me to like it. I want to challenge myself fashion wise each season. I want to push myself and try something new. It is all about communication. I have such a great team and I am lucky to have them and we are all very close and we sit down and we talk. Then I get naked and make clothes on myself!”

You like to challenge yourself. When do you think that first started?
“I have always dreamt of being in the fashion industry. It is always something that I have felt in my tummy that I have always had to do. Before I started on my own line, I was working with a denim brand and a sunglasses brand, so I was dipping my toe in the industry for a while before I could take the licensing deals and bring them in house and fund everything myself, it is all self funded. So I don’t have any licensing deals at all and when I was in a position to do that, that is when it felt right.”

What do you look for in your team as the people you work with?
“My team are so great. We are a small team but we are growing. They are all incredibly, talented, passionate and focused. I also think it is important to enjoy the people you are working with, we have a lot of fun every day. They are passionate for what they do and they believe in my brand and what I’m creating, I have the same team that I had when I first started over six years ago. I really encourage my team to grow with me as I grow with the brand as well. I have a few people who started out with me as interns that now have high up jobs in marketing, press and sales as well. It is a really nice family atmosphere.”

It must be a different experience now to work with the team, person to person, rather than over Skype.
“It is great. I am very hands on with every aspect of the business. I never did as much Skype as it came across. Every time I did an interview where I said I had a call on Skype, everybody thought that was how I designed my collections, via Skype. It was never that way. I did a lot of travelling which was difficult because I don’t want to leave my children. Being a working mum, you feel guilty every time you go out the door and you have to work. It is great to be in London and I am going to my studio every day which is just over the bridge in Battersea. It is great that I am here all the time, I have five categories now and I have just launched e-commerce and I am looking into retail. There are a lot of balls I am juggling at the moment and it is definitely easier being here.”
When did you think that it was real possibility that you could be in fashion?
“I don’t think there was one particular moment, it is what I always wanted to do. I did a presentation when I first started ten seasons ago, I had a room at a hotel in New York and I did sometimes one-on-one presentations or group presentations and I did that for four days to fashion press, buyers and I literally talked through the collection. I had ten dresses and I would sit there and talk about them. The dress would come out on a model and I would unzip the dress and talk about the corsetry and the inspiration and the fabrics. Sometimes I would be talking for hours on end to people who did not actually speak English! I just like the talk so I would be talking away, I really wanted people to understand the concept and understand why we do it. I remember that it was 3am and I would be standing in the florist in the hotel in my slippers trying to decide on the flowers. I didn’t have a stylist to decide the hair and make-up, things have come such a long way since those days.

“I think right at the beginning, I didn’t know what people would think and there were lots of raised eyebrows, or those that could raise their eyebrows, when they heard that I was going to do this. Pop star who is married to a footballer really going to do a clothing line? A lot of people had preconceptions and I didn’t go out to prove anybody wrong. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.”

You would never get Karl Lagerfield showing how something was pieced together.
“I was so proud of it. I wasn’t out to prove to anybody that I know the ins and outs of this dress, I genuinely did. I never set out to talk through the collection, it just happened naturally. I was doing it for four days and it just came naturally to me. I am sure people were thinking ‘shut up, stop going on about grograin waistband but for me, it was important to do that.”

What drove you to move from the presentations to the show?
“I have eight minutes to show the industry, the buyers, the press, my customer, what my fashion is that season. It is important to me to do this. I have moved from the small presentations to a big show, though I do like to keep it as personal as I can. It is great, I have eight minutes, it is incredibly expensive and the pressure’s on and I get the opportunity to collaborate with the best people in the industry with regards to the style, the hair and the make-up. Such a lot of thought and time and effort goes into the eight minutes. People would be quite shocked at the conversations that I have for days on end, even months on end actually, with regards to the set, the lighting, the music, the hair and make-up and the styling. I love it, there is a lot of pressure and it is incredibly expensive.

“I like people to see my collection through my eyes and I have eight minutes to do that. I am a perfectionist, I like everything to be right and I am probably a complete pain in the neck to work with as it is important to me. It really is. I have grown this brand from nothing to where it is now.”

Would you ever show in London?
“I would say never say never. Maybe one day but I have a really good thing going in New York. I get a great slot in fashion week, the Americans have made me feel so welcome and the American fashion industry have been so supportive. America is a huge market for me but I would never say never. I am proud to be British and I love to support the British fashion industry in any way I can. I am very proud but may be one day at some point.”

How involved are you in the financial aspects of line? Do you get a budge to work with?
“I am very aware of everything that goes on with the brand and I like being creative but at the same time, I am running a business so I have two parts to my collection. I have, what I call, my signature part of the collection which is what my customer really wants and the other is very Victoria Beckham. I always like to push myself and have a strong fashion message as well. I do have to take into account that I am running a business and I am very aware how much the fabrics cost, how much the make costs, if I decide to put an extra pocket detail on something, I know that is going to cost more money.”

How do you deal with criticism?
“I think that I can learn from constructive criticism. No one is going to be nice all the time. It would be unrealistic to think that I will never get any criticism so I take on constructive criticism. There are a lot of members of the fashion press who have been on this journey with me, I haven’t done this myself. I do have a great team. “

Do you get frustrated by people talking about you and your fashion lines as being the same thing?
“Right at the beginning, I was so aware of preconceptions and I think there is less of that now. People are now judging the collection for the collection. They  did that right at the beginning and that is what I was grateful to the industry for. They came into the room and they were judging the clothes for the clothes, they left their preconceptions at the door. I had that conversation with Marc Jacobs not too long ago and he said ‘you have got to stop saying that, they did not leave their preconceptions at the door. The clothes spoke for themselves and you earned what they said about the collection’. I am very aware of it less and less now and the clothes are speaking for themselves.”

In the start, you only wore your clothes but now you are more comfortable wearing other designers.
“I am wearing myself today but I love to mix it up. I enjoy fashion. I love Prada, Balenciaga, Lanvin, there are so many incredible designers which I love to wear. I like to support other designers. There are lots of British designers I love to support and there are lots of women as well. There are so many strong women out there and I love clothes.”

How do you get dressed in the morning?
“Well I put one foot in and then the other… I have four kids. Brooklyn is here today, watching me and realising that mummy has a job now. He is realising that I actually do something. I have four kids so I don’t have much time as I would like to, to think about what I am going to wear. When I go to sleep at night, I think about what I am going to wear the next day. It was interesting that I was having this conversation with David the other day and he does the same thing about football. I had the same conversation with Gordon Ramsay who said he visualises food the night before. You visualise what your passion is.”

Generally, are you are a morning or an evening person?
“A little bit of both. I am up early in the morning to get the kids ready for school and going through timetables tests and spelling tests. I am also up late at night as I have a baby and then I have a 14 year old who refuses to go to bed- Brooklyn. So I am up late and early, I don’t get enough sleep. It is only then I get time to pluck my eyebrows and put on a face pack, those sorts of thing. I don’t get as much sleep as I would like.”

How do you deal with travelling?
“Dark glasses. I don’t travel so much now, that is why we decided to spend more time in London. We call LA our home and we call London our home, which is the best of both worlds really. I don’t travel so much, I don’t like to. I have to go back and forth to New York for work and I like to do lots of in stores to understand my retailer wants and what my customers want.”

You have been snapped in flats recently, have high heels had their day?
“(looking at the heels on her feet) No. I do actually wear flats. I wore flats and the amount of attention the flats got, it was quite ridiculous really.  Of course I wear flats, I always wear them. I am not into platforms so much now, but I do like heels.”

How do you juggle work and family life?
“I don’t know. It is all about juggling. It is just like any working mum out there, you just try to do your best. You constantly feel guilty but it is about being disciplined really. I have good people who handle my schedule. So if there is a parent’s night or a nativity play, I plan everything around that so I can always be there and always be involved with the school and cater to what the school need. I really enjoy being a mum more than anything and I would do anything for my kids but I love doing what I do and it is about getting the balance right which is not easy at all.”

Movie Review: Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor

Starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Lance Gross, Robbie Jones, Kim Kardashian and others
Star rating: **

I have to confess that i watched this film more out of curiousity than anything. I loved Robbie Jones in his role in now cancelled TV series 'Hellcats' so i wanted to see him in a film playing someone apart from a love interest and man candy. This film was also being billed as the infamous and scandalous Kim Kardashian, someone who knows how to create and stir and keep all the attention on her. Though she is used to playing herself with her reality TV shows, would she be able to keep up with a script?

Judith (Jurnee Smollet-Bell) is an uptight in-house therapist for an online dating agency run by Janice (Vanessa Williams). Judith has been married to local pharmacist Brice (Lance Gross) for several years and is stuck in a monotonous daily routine. Her only friend takes the shape in Kim Kardashian, who's only role in the story to critique Judith's wardrobe. Enter Harley (Robbie Jones), a young technological tycoon who is looking to invest in the dating agency, for what reason, it is never clear. He takes a shine to Judith and starts to pursue her relentlessly until she finally gives in to, wait for it, temptation.

This film has the most unbelievable storyline ever and not in a good way. All the characters have their faults but the use of religion means that it's okay as long as you stick by your husband and family at the end of the day. Jurnee does her best in a character which though described as 'smart' is more susceptible to the male influences in her life. Her husband in the film, Brice seems to be okay with the fact that his wife had an affair and only reacts when there is a chance that all is not well between his wife and her lover. Jones plays the role of the jealous lover very well and though he is not meant to, as the audience, you start to feel as though he is being taken advantage of by Judith. Williams French accent is terrible and though pretentious, you feel as though she has been put into the film for comic value. The highlight of this film is Kardashian who is practically plays herself and that is saying something about the film. A forgettable film with even more forgettable storyline.

Beauty Review: Liz Earle beauty routine

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish 100ml (£13.25), Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic 200ml (£13.25)
Liz Earle Skin Repair Light 50ml £19.25

It has been a long while since i have done a beauty review, partly because my beauty routine does not change much. I have very fickle skin, oily and prone to acne, which means that i have to be very careful that whatever i introduce to my skin does not make it worse or create more breakouts. I know that the market is very well catered for skin like mine but i have literally tried everything including medication and have come to the resolution that i just need to control it rather than cure it.

So after that long winded explanation, why did i choose Liz Earle? I think Liz Earle's cosmetics have earnt themselves a cult reputation among the blogger world and every beauty writer worth her salt, has tried out these products so i was late on this bandwagon. I was originally only going to buy the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish but then ended up buying the whole routine. I wanted to see how the routine would work all together on my skin.

The Cleanse and Polish really does smell amazing and i ended up using it in my own way. The lotion comes with its own linen cloth which is used to exfoliate the product on your skin. So first you apply the lotion in a thick layer, leave on for 5 mins and then use the cloth to gently remove make up/grease off your skin. I stopped using the product like this because it aggravated my skin and made it too dry in some areas. Instead, i just rinsed off with lukewarm water. After drying, you are meant to apply the Instant Boost Tonic with a cotton wool to rehydrate the skin and then put on Skin Repair Light to moisturise.

I have to say that despite the hype these products has recieved, they did not work too well for skin. My breakouts increased as a result and the moisturiser seemed to create too much oil on my face. I can imagine these products working better for people with sensitive or normal skin though as the products have the right consistency for those skin types. The Instant Tonic Boost was my favourite because it was hydrating and relaxing but i did have to substitute my own products for the cleanser and the moisturiser. These products were just too heavy on my skin and made my skin oiler and created more breakouts.
