Having seen Darjeeling Limited, i was already familiar with Wes Anderson's style of film and this film was no exception. Set in 1960's, the film is based in a coastal town of New England called New Pezance and looks at life in small town America. The film follows the love story of two dysfunctional teens Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward) who meet, fall in love and decide to run away together, all planned through a series of letters. Sam is an orphan and a lonely boy scout who has no where to go but is mature beyond his years. Suzy has a fondness for French music that she plays on her portable player, sc-fi novels and spies on her friends and family using her binoculars which make her feel as though she has special powers.
This film is very much in Anderson's style of directing, deadpan detachment conveyed by Suzy and handwritten notes and maps. He does create a world entirely left to itself, in this instance, being run by boy scouts who end up going to look for the young couple. The actors Gilman and Hayward have done a great job in playing their characters and no matter how weird they come across, you can't help but be endeared towards them.
Watch this film if you are looking to see something different this year with a touch of innocence and quaint country life.
Nice write-up. Wes Anderson seems like he really brought his A-game to this story and it shows. Everything here just looks beautiful and works out perfectly that it easily has to on my list for best of the year so far. Hopefully Anderson can keep this up.
