OMG Oh My God

Starring Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar
Star rating: ***

When i heard about this film and saw the trailers, i was sceptical. How on earth would this film carry off a storyline where the main character is trying to fight a court case against God?! It just seemed unbelievable but i wanted to watch the film for Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar. The pair who made an amazing comedic pair in many other films like 'Hera Pheri' and 'Garam Masala' were starring in this film and i was curious to watch it for them.

Kanji Lalj Mehta (Paresh Rawal) is an atheist who does not understand obsession with God and using it as a way of getting people to go on pilgrimages and proving themselves as true followers. He is an antiques salesman who sells statues of the various Gods to people for extortionate prices. One day his shop is hit by an earthquake and the insurance company refuses to pay up calling it an act of God. Furious Kanji abandoned by his family heads to court to sue God.

What is particularly brilliant about this film is Paresh Rawal. His comedic timing and delivery of each dialogue still makes people jump on their seats and clap wholeheartedly. Akshay Kumar plays a God who has some CGI stunt scenes which seem unnecessary as his pure presence throughout the film would have been enough.  Mithun Chakraborty plays a weird guru in the film but his character is never developed in the film either. The other characters in the film just come across as useless in the film.

It is a good pass time film which i would not particularly go out of my way to watch again. It had the right to go blasphemous but it just about holds the line where God is not disparaged yet accepted by the end of the film.

Heroine

Starring Kareena Kapoor
Star rating ***

There wasn't as much hype about a Bollywood film than there was for 'Heroine'. Kareena  Kapoor has been totally immersed in promotions for this film with her endorsing so many different brands looking as glamorous as possible. Her item number 'Halkat Jawani' has a lot to answer for with the actress looking sensational and it definitely helped create a buzz for the film. With the release coinciding with Kareena's birthday, this film has a lot riding on it for the 'Chameli' actress. Director Madhur Bhandharkar is well known for making female centric films like 'Fashion' and 'Chandni Bar' and they have been known to create hard hitting headlines for the lead actors so this film was marketed to be no different.

Mahi Arora (Kareena Kapoor) is a moody film actress in this film who is desperate to hang on to her fame and sacrifices her relationships as a result. She is kept afloat by her capable assistants, her cold mother and a wise shrink who encourages her to find her happiness in herself. Mahi goes through the film trying to keep her life and career going and her wily PR played by Divya Dutta who makes the actresses move a new story in the media.

This film sets out to be a gritty drama that exposes the underground world of the Bollywood film industry. However, it comes across a rather over dramatic soap opera with lots of industry in jokes. Though this film is no way near as emotionally hard hitting as Bhandarkar's previous films, it does still manage to hold the audience's interest. It is hard for Kareena Kapoor to explore the role Mahi Arora to her best as she is frankly tossed from one mini drama to another which we as an audience assume that this is the nature of the industry. One thing that is never explained in this film is why Mahi is so broken as she is and despite a line at the beginning about a broken childhood, we never find out why she is so damaged. The supporting actors in this film do help give some light moments and Ranvir Shorey is fantastic as the crazy art house director and Helen's appearance as a yesteryear actress is remarkable.

The soundtrack for this film is great and some favourites for me are 'Saiyaan' and 'Kwahishein'. I don't think this film is rubbish but Mahi's character needed to be developed a lot more to make this brilliant. This is not a scratch on 'Fashion' but still worth a watch.

The Cake and Bake Show

The Cake and Bake show was a great experience and while i adore sugary treats, it was interesting to see how much work goes into making these delicious looking cakes! They had some interesting cake demonstrations too with some bakers showing how intricate the work is that goes into making the cakes so outstanding. They had a cake competition taking place at the show too which was based around the theme of beaches. Check out the fish and chips cake below, so well done!

London Fashion Weekend: Project D

Project D is one fashion brand that i was always curious to check out as it was Danni Minogue's label that has been heavily publicised through mediums like fashion magazines and the X Factor. It really does have timeless style and i liked the material too. It is definitely worth a look!
